Echocardiogram

An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart. The test is routinely used in the diagnosis, management and follow-up of patients with any suspected or known heart diseases. It can provide a wealth of helpful information, including the size and shape of the heart, its pumping capacity, and the location and extent of any tissue damage.

How the test is performed

The ultrasound technician will position you on the table on your side, apply gel on your skin over the heart and chest area, and then press on the skin with a hand-held transducer to obtain the necessary images.

How to prepare for the test

There is no preparation required.

How the test will feel

The echocardiogram is usually painless.  The pressure put over your chest and heart could possibly cause slight discomfort.

"I had a total knee replacement at KDH. From admitting to discharge, my experience could not have been more positive. The kindness, care and service were exceptional and way beyond words. I have never experienced such excellent personal care and I have had many surgeries before this one. I am vegan and therefore do not consume any animal products whatsoever. The dietitian came to discuss my diet with me soon after my surgery and I was accommodated for the first time ever. I could not believe the level of personal attention. There is so much more that I could say about this hospital and its staff and all of it would be positive. A big thank you to all of the medical staff and volunteers."
