Pacemaker Check

If you’ve had a pacemaker implanted, you need to have it checked regularly. Our Diagnostic Imaging staff use a computer to check that the pacemaker is working properly.

How the test is performed

You will be seated and an electrode placed on each wrist. A special magnet will then be placed over your pacemaker. Information from your pacemaker will be transmitted to the Ottawa Heart Institute pacemaker/defibrillator clinic.

How to prepare for the test

There is no preparation needed.

How the test will feel

You will not feel anything during the pacemaker check. The check can take 15 to 20 minutes, depending on how complicated your pacemaker is.

“I’d like to share about the beautiful experience I had in your ER last week. To begin, the woman at the COVID screening station was so kind and understanding. She even allowed my five-year-old and myself to sit outside for our lunch, so I could give him some fresh air and room to move around. Our time with Dr Brisebois was possibly the best experience I’ve ever had with a physician. He was so kind and patient. He listened to my concerns as a parent. He validated our experience and shared plenty of information, and was just a rare gem in the medical field.”
